Box Score It will be eighth seed or bust for EMU. After Wednesday's tough 3-1 loss to Randolph-Macon, the soccer women still need a win to clinch it, but can finish no higher than the bottom seed in the upcoming ODAC Tournament.
Eastern Mennonite, 6-9-1 overall and 4-6 in the conference, play two road games to wrap up the regular season: Sunday at Emory & Henry and next Tuesday at Bridgewater. Live stats and video will be available for both.
The game with the Yellow Jackets featured a battle of the two teams trying to stake a claim on seventh place in the ODAC. It was a fitting back-and-forth early.
R-MC took the first lead scoring on a fast break in the 26th minute. The Royals returned fire quickly. The Yellow Jackets fouled only a minute after their goal just inside of midfield. Morgan Hill (Martinsville, Va./Carlisle) sent a nice kick to the weak side, finding Hannah Walker (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield). EMU's defender sent in a shot which glanced in off the post, equalizing in the 28th minute.
The second half belonged to the visitors, however, as the Royals started to show the effects of playing a game at Virginia Wesleyan the day before. Randolph-Macon out-shot the women 10-2 in the final 45, sticking in goals in the 65th and 84th minutes to roll out with the decision.
The Yellow Jackets finished with a 22-7 advantage in shots. Keeper Brianna Stanard (Spotsylvania, Va./Spotsylvania) finished with six saves. Walker scored her second goal of the season on EMU's only shot on goal, while Nora Osei (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) led the team with three attempts.
Because of their head-to-head win over ninth-place Sweet Briar, the Royals can clinch a playoff berth with a win in either of their final games or a loss from SBC in either of the Vixens' final games.
Coach Ted Erickson talks about the game and what he is expecting over the final games of the season:
