Box Score 2 The EMU volleyball women wrapped up their ODAC slate Saturday, playing in a tri-match at Bridgewater College. The Royals dropped a three-set match to BC, before falling in three to non-conference opponent Catholic.
Bridgewater 3, EMU 0
The Royals played from behind most of the match against BC, trailing by as many as eight early in game one. A 7-0 run put the women within one point, but they couldn't gain control in a 25-21 loss.
Bridgewater took quick leads in games two and three, and didn't relent in either one, closing with 25-16 and 25-15 wins.
McKenna Carter (Waynesboro, Va./Stuarts Draft) led the women with seven kills, while Kayla Smeltzer (Richmond, Va./Maggie L. Walker Gov.) was right behind with six. Dani Driver (Cheverly, Md./Elizabeth Seton) had 20 set assists.
Defensively, Rachel Kennel (Parkesburg, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) and Jessica Goertzen (Goessel, Kan./Goessel) each had a pair of blocks. Katie Miller (San Antonio, Tex./Brandeis) tied for the match high with 19 digs.
Catholic 3, EMU 0
The women hung with the Cardinals early, but couldn't get a big run to get in front. CUA eventually won the first set, 25-21. EMU scored the first four points in game two, but Catholic took over and grabbed a 25-19 win. Game three was tight until a 9-0 run knocked out the Royals. CUA clinched with a 25-12 decision.
Kennel had a great match with eight kills, 16 digs and two blocks. Carter and Kayley Argenbright (Fishersville, Va./Wilson Memorial) each had six kills. Driver came in with 26 assists.
Miller again led the back row with 20 digs, while Alena Yoder (Elkhart, Ind./Bethany Christian) added 10.
The Royals settle at 9-17 after the losses, including 2-9 in the ODAC. They close the year with a non-conference contest at Goucher next Saturday.
