Box Score Needing a win to stay in the playoff hunt, EMU's soccer women led most of the game at Guilford on Saturday. But after a game-tying goal from the Quakers, Eastern Mennonite needed a score from freshman Sophie Smith (Monrovia, Md./Linganore) in the 80th minute to seal a 2-1 victory.
The Royals had the edge throughout much of the first half, and grabbed the lead when Nora Osei (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) hit the net off a corner kick in the 27th minute. It was Osei's ODAC-leading 14th goal of the year, while Morgan Hill (Martinsville, Va./Carlisle) picked up her league-leading ninth assist on the play.
Guilford stepped up in the second half, and eventually tied the score in the 78th minute. But less than two minutes later, Smith came through with the game-winning goal, getting an assist from Kristen Kirby (Fishersville, Va./Wilson Memorial).
The Quakers had a 15-12 advantage in shots, but keeper Becca Borg (Gig Harbor, Wash./Peninsula) had a big night with six saves. Kendall Moyer (Fincastle, Va./James River) took five shots to lead the Royals, with Osei firing three.
Eastern Mennonite improves to 10-7 with the key win, including 5-6 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. It gives the women their first 10-win season since finishing 13-4-1 in 2006.
The win also kept the Royals in a tie for seventh in the ODAC standings. EMU ends the regular season at Roanoke on Tuesday. The Maroons are tied for fourth at 7-3-1. The women need a win to clinch a berth in the ODAC Tournament. If they lose, the Royals could still get in the tourney if ninth-place Emory & Henry loses or ties against tenth-place Hollins.
