Box Score In a matchup of two building programs, Eastern Mennonite came up a step short, falling 2-1 at home against Shenandoah. The loss evens the women out in ODAC play at 2-2, while SU improves to 4-0-1 in the league.
The Hornets controlled the first 20 minutes of play, but EMU held them off. In the 35th minute, the visitors hit the scoreboard with the first goal for a 1-0 lead. The Royals made a few runs up the field, with the best chance coming in the 41st minute. Nora Osei (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) pushed up through the defense, setting up a one-on-one with the SU goalie, but her shot from the corner of the box slipped just wide.
Shenandoah added to their lead in the 59th minute, getting a goal in traffic to make it 2-0.
The women had another good chance in the 83rd minute, but Asia Malcolm's (Richmond, Va./John Randolph Tucker) backside shot off a corner kick went high.
Less than three minutes later, the Royals broke through. On a direct kick from just outside of the box, Erica Detweiler (Hickory, N.C./Fred T., Foard) ripped a shot directly at SU's keeper who knocked the ball down. Kendall Moyer (Fincastle, Va./James River) swarmed in and attempted a shot, which was also stopped. But Osei made the final touch to get to the net and cut the lead in half with just 4:52 left to play.
Despite their surge, the women couldn't get off another shot and took the one-goal loss.
Aided by their team speed, Shenandoah had a 27-7 edge in shots, including 12-3 on goal. Becca Borg (Gig Harbor, Wash./Peninsula) made several nice plays in front of the net and finished with 10 saves.
Osei and Moyer each had two of the Royals' shots.
Eastern Mennonite falls to 7-3 with the loss, their second in three games. They have another important ODAC game this weekend, hosting Emory & Henry Saturday at 4:00pm.
