Back Row Keeps EMU Close To Preseason Favorite

Box Score

The Lady Royals put up a good fight against ODAC favorite Randolph-Macon before falling in straight sets Tuesday night.

Eastern Mennonite's women jumped to an early lead in game one and trailed only 18-17 late, but the Yellow Jackets used a quick 5-0 run to seal a 25-19 win.

The visitors got their feet under them for game two, scoring the first seven points en route to a 25-12 decision.

Game three was much tighter until a late run from R-MC took over for a 25-15 closer.

The Lady Royals' spirited back row play kept them in the contest, as three players had nine or more digs.  Setter Mattie Lehman (New Paris, IN/Bethany Christian) topped the team with 11 digs to go with her 19 assists.  Katie Miller (San Antonio, TX/Brandeis) had 10 digs and Amber Loftin (Amherst, VA/Amherst County) added nine.

Sara Ritchie (Harrisonburg, VA/Turner Ashby) led EMU with 10 kills.  Loftin was close behind with eight knockdowns.

The women, now 2-9 overall and 0-4 in the ODAC, hit the road for their next two matches starting with Fairmont State on Saturday.
