Box Score The Eastern Mennonite women's volleyball team wrapped up their 2012 season Saturday afternoon, hosting Mary Washington in non-conference action. The Lady Royals played close throughout the contest, but still ended up with a 3-0 loss.
After pre-match ceremonies recognizing seniors Karla Martin (Stuarts Draft, VA/Grace Christian), Rachel Lehman (Chambersburg, PA/Shalom Christian Academy) and Michelle Miller (Sarasota, FL/Sarasota Christian), the women played a great game one, hitting .303 as a team. The Eagles, however, used a 4-0 run to grab an 18-15 lead which they never relinquished. UMW won the game 25-21.
The visitors broke open a close game two late, closing on an 8-1 run to win 25-17.
EMU jumped to a 12-8 lead in game three. Still leading 17-14, it looked like the women might force a game four. The Eagles surged on a 7-1 run to steal the lead, but the Lady Royals came right back. Martin landed back-to-back ace serves to flip-flop the women back in front, 23-22, and Sara Ritchie (Harrisonburg, VA/Turner Ashby) dropped in a kill to set up game point. Mary Washington had an answer once again, however, rattling off four unanswered points to grab the winner, 26-24.
Ritchie led the attack with 16 kills. Setter Mattie Lehman (New Paris, IN/Bethany Christian) was all over the floor, putting up 26 assists while also tying for the match high with 13 digs.
Martin finished with 10 digs and three service aces in her final contest. Jessica Goertzen (Goessel, KS/Goessel) had two aces and Katie Miller (San Antonio, TX/Brandeis) added 12 digs.
Eastern Mennonite ends the year with a record of 4-19 overall and 0-11 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
