Wenger Hits Net Twice But Defense Gives Up Late Goal in 3-2 Loss

Box Score

Taylor Wenger (New Holland, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) provided the scoring, but the defense gave up a late goal in EMU's 3-2 loss to Methodist Sunday afternoon at the Mary Washington Classic in Fredericksburg, VA.

It was obvious early on that the offenses would be featured, as the teams combined to average a shot nearly every other minute.  As the pace slowed, the Monarchs hit the scoreboard first, scoring in the 21st minute.

Seven minutes later, Wenger netted Eastern Mennonite's first goal of the game and of the season.

The game stayed tied at 1-1 until the second half, when Methodist again went in front with a score in the 57th minute.

It began to look like the game might end with a 2-1 score, but Wenger provided her second equalizer of the game, scoring with less than seven minutes to play.

The final seconds started ticking with overtime looming before the Monarchs again scored, this time getting the game winner with 46 seconds left.

The tough loss was the fifth straight for EMU to open the season, although Wenger provided the women's first goals of the 2011 campaign.

Methodist had a 19-6 edge in shots, including 11-5 in shots on goal.  Keeper Jenni Beck (Archbold, OH/Archbold) made eight stops.

After playing five games in the season's first ten days, Eastern Mennonite gets a break before its next game at Southern Virginia this Thursday.  Game time in Buena Vista, VA, is 4:00pm.
