Box Score The Eastern Mennonite volleyball team was as Emory & Henry in the second of back-to-back key ODAC matches. On Saturday the Lady Royals lost to Guilford in four, and they fell to the Wasps on Sunday, despite a great effort.
Playing without leading hitter Sara Ritchie (Harrisonburg, VA/Turner Ashby) for the second day, the offense responded. Four straight kills gave EMU a 23-21 lead in game one, but Emory & Henry scored four in a row to steal the game, 25-23.
The two teams traded leads early in game two before EHC took over and won 25-20.
The Lady Royals then had an early 7-3 lead in game three before the Wasps regrouped and tied it at 8-8. A late 6-0 run spelled the end as the home team closed out the day by a 25-18 score.
EMU hit .291 as a team and landed seven aces, but defensively they couldn't slow down Emory & Henry.
Kyla Moorefield (Danville, VA/Tunstall) led all players with 12 kills while Tabitha Bowman (Waynesboro, VA/Stuarts Draft) was also in double digits at 10 on just 16 attacks. Freshman Amber Loftin (Madison Heights, VA/Amherst) got the start in place of Ritchie and responded with six kills on 10 swings.
Setter Mattie Lehman (New Paris, IN/Bethany Christian) had 24 assists and five service aces, while Jessica Goertzen (Goessel, KS/Goessel) had a match high eight digs.
The loss drops EMU to 5-16 overall and 0-8 in the ODAC. The next match for the women is on Saturday, Oct. 15, when they host Mary Baldwin as part of EMU Homecoming. Start time is 12:00pm.
