Box Score Maybe all it took was a new month. After a winless month of September to start the season, the Eastern Mennonite soccer women got their first win Saturday in Harrisonburg – on the first day of October.
The Lady Royals, who were also helped by the addition of three women to their roster earlier in the week, hosted Emory & Henry on Parent Recognition Day.
Both teams had good shots in the first 45 minutes, but the keepers were up to the task. Chaska Yoder (Plain City, OH/Jonathan Alder), who played for EMU last fall and was one of the trio to join just a few days ago, nearly scored in the 28th minute, but her shot ricocheted out off the post. The game was scoreless at halftime.
Eastern Mennonite had the edge on the field in the early parts of the second, but still couldn't find the net. The women finally took the lead in the 68th. Nora Osei (Springfield, VA/West Springfield), another of the new joinees, had a shot blocked but junior Kori Wenger (New Holland, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) picked up the loose ball and drove it home for the 1-0 lead.
The defense stifled the Wasps over the final 22 minutes, allowing just one shot which Jenni Beck (Archbold, OH/Archbold) collected for a save, as they held on for the shutout victory.
The women had an 11-8 edge in shots, although Emory & Henry was up 6-5 in shots on goal. Beck finished with six saves.
EMU improves to 1-10 with their first win, including 1-4 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Lady Royals will look for a winning streak when they host Sweet Briar Tuesday at 4:00pm.
