Box Score Playing their first road contest of 2010, the Lady Royals scored first in two of three sets. But the home team regrouped everytime, as Shenandoah University swept Eastern Mennonite Wednesday night in non-conference action, 3-0.
EMU scored the first point of set one but then fell behind 6-1. The women got back within 16-13, but got no closer in a 25-18 loss.
In set two, the Lady Royals scored the first two as Elisa Troyer (Harrisonburg, Va./Broadway) hammered a kill and Brittany Childress (Gloucester, Va./Christchurch) dropped in a service ace. But the Hornets again answered swiftly and used an 8-2 run to seal the win, 25-20.
Shenandoah moved quickly to close things out, taking a 9-3 edge in set three and winning 25-19.
Junior Tabitha Bowman (Wayensboro, Va./Stuarts Draft) tied for a match high with 12 kills. Troyer came in with 12 digs and eight kills. Monika Burkholder (Linville, Va./Eastern Mennonite) had seven kills.
Jessica Goertzen (Goessel, Ks./Goessel) had 18 assists. Childress led the defense with a match high 16 digs.
Now 1-4, Eastern Mennonite will be at the Frostburg State Tournament this weekend. The women play Frostburg State and North Carolina Wesleyan on Friday. After a final pool play game against Capital on Saturday, the Lady Royals will get one more contest.
