Solid Team Effort Earns Draw With Mary Washington

Box Score

For the second time in four days, the Eastern Mennonite University women's soccer team took to the pitch against a 2009 NCAA National Championships qualifier. Wednesday the Lady Royals dropped a 2-0 decision at Frostburg State. This time around, the women got to play at home, as they welcomed in Mary Washington and fought to a scoreless tie.

EMU controlled the flow for the first 25 minutes, firing five shots while limiting Mary Washington to one. But the Eagles' keeper was up to the task, picking up three saves in the stretch.

UMW then took over for the final 20 minutes of the half, but couldn't score either. In the second stanza, the teams took turns with the advantage but again, neither team could find the net.

As the game slipped into overtime, Mary Washington's depth gave them an edge. The Lady Royals didn't take a shot over the final 40 minutes of play, but their defense held firm to earn the scoreless tie.

Keeper Abby Diffenbach (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) played a great game and racked up 10 saves, with another round of credit going to the defensive players. Chaska Yoder (Plain City, Oh./Jonathan Alder) had two shots on goal.

EMU (0-1-1) stays at home for its next game, hosting Southern Virginia on Wednesday, Sept. 8. Game time is 7:00pm.
