Box Score Hoping to end a four-game losing streak, the Eastern Mennonite women's soccer team stepped out of conference play Tuesday night and hosted Shenandoah. After a "bend but don't break" first half, the Lady Royals took over the scoreless contest with two second-half goals in a 2-0 win.
The visiting Hornets came out swarming in the first 45 minutes, launching 12 shots. Only four were on goal, however, and EMU was solid enough to keep the score 0-0.
The Lady Royals took control early in the second. In the 56th minute, freshman Taylor Wenger (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) gave Melissa Miller (Bradenton, Fl./Lakewood Ranch) a nice pass just inside midfield. Miller blew through the Shenandoah defense and ripped a beautiful shot past their keeper for a 1-0 lead. It was her third goal of the season.
Less than 12 minutes later, the women got insurance. Wenger made a streak up the left side and beat the Hornets' keeper again, putting EMU ahead 2-0.
The Lady Royals dominated play down the stretch, only allowing two shots in the final 25 minutes to seal the win.
Eastern Mennonite outshot Shenandoah 7-3 in the decisive second half. Of the women's 12 shots in the game, nine were on goal. Keeper Abby Diffenbach (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite was good for five saves.
The win breaks the losing spell for the Lady Royals, who are now 2-6-1 overall. They have one more non-conference game Thursday at Catholic before returning to ODAC play Saturday at Emory & Henry.
