Box Score After dropping their conference opener at Virginia Wesleyan last Saturday, the Eastern Mennonite women's soccer team was looking to chalk up a league win when they hosted Randolph-Macon Wednesday afternoon. Despite getting 17 shots in the goal, the Lady Royals couldn't find the net as they took the 1-0 loss.
The first half was evenly played with each squad getting its share of shots on goal. Neither team scored, however, sending the 0-0 game into halftime.
The back-and-forth play continued in the second half, but the Yellow Jackets took advantage of some early miscommunications in EMU's defense. In the 51st minute, R-MC's Angela Nelms broke free up the right side. She cut inside, got past a defender and beat keeper Abby Diffenbach (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) to make it 1-0.
The Lady Royals pushed hard on offense, outshooting their visitors the remainder of the game. Despite getting 12 shots in the final 45 minutes, the women couldn't get one past the Yellow Jackets' keeper and took the shutout loss.
EMU held a 17-13 edge in shots, although R-MC had an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal. Diffenbach finished with seven saves.
Melissa Miller (Bradenton, Fl./Lakewood Ranch) ripped five shots for the Lady Royals. Laura Beckler (Richmond, Va./Atlee) added four, including two on goal. Fellow freshman Taylor Wenger (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) also had a pair of shots on goal.
The loss drops the women to 1-5-1 overall and 0-2 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Eastern Mennonite is at Washington & Lee this Saturday, with an 11:00am start time in Lexington.
