Royals Stifle Randolph-Macon To Open ODAC Play, 62-41

Box Score

Having a player record a double double is not a rare occurance. Having two do it in the same game is. But with Eastern Mennonite holding Randolph-Macon to just 27% shooting, there were plenty of defensive rebounds to go around, and two Royals women collected double doubles in a 62-41 drubbing of the Yellow Jackets.

The defensive effort was fine enough, but the Royals locked down a R-MC team which was picked third in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Preseason Poll. The women also held Maggie Roy scoreless on 0-10 shooting. She had been leading the Yellow Jackets with 14 points per game.

Neither team shot well in the opening minutes, as EMU took a 6-1 lead at the 13:35 mark. But freshman Kala Yoders (Myerstown, Pa./ELCO) took over on the offensive end and powered the women to a 29-19 halftime lead as she scored 16 points in the frame.

R-MC adjusted to Yoders in the second half, but other players picked up the slack.

Eastern Mennonite quickly pushed the edge to 17 points after a Danielle Rittenhouse (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) jumper made it 38-21 with 16:16 to go.

Kori Penick (Lynchburg, Va./Virginia Episcopal) cashed in on a three-point play with 6:55 left to balloon the lead to 50-28.

The Yellow Jackets never got closer than 15 points the rest of the way as the women cruised to the 21-point win.

Yoders finished with her first career double double, netting 20 points along with 11 rebounds. Sara Lamneck (Swoope, Va./Buffalo Gap) helped power EMU inside with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

"I thought Kala and Sara just played so well, so unselfishly," Coach Kevin Griffin said. "They looked for each other and passed to each other. Danielle also had some big shots."

Rittenhouse also finished in double figures with 11 points and added six boards. Addie Bashorun (Manassas, Va./Brentsville District) pulled down nine rebounds.

Griffin praised his team's defense.

"We defended them very well in the halfcourt," he said. "I don't remember getting beat off the dribble very often."

Randolph-Macon got few open looks at the basket and finished 17-64 from the floor, including just 3-23 from long range. EMU shot 41% and had a commanding 58-36 edge in rebounding.

The women did turn the ball over, committing 32 miscues to R-MC's 28. They also struggled from the free throw line, making just 12 of 27 attempts.

The Royals even their record at 2-2 with the win and move to 1-0 in the ODAC. They get a few days off over Thanksgiving before hosting rival Bridgewater next Monday at 7:00pm.
