Box Score Despite entering with a record only slightly above .500, Lynchburg came in on a tear having won 9 of its last 12. The Eastern Mennonite volleyball team hung with the Hornets early Tuesday night in Harrisonburg before wilting in a 3-0 loss.
In set one, the Lady Royals held early leads of 6-4 and 9-6. But Lynchburg used a number of short runs to outscore EMU 19-9 to close the set, downing the women 25-18.
EMU again took a lead in the second set, but a round of viscious serving from the Hornets' Rachel Turk pushed the visitors ahead 10-5. Lynchburg cruised from there in a 25-14 win.
Following the pattern of the match, the Lady Royals jumped to a 4-1 lead in the third set. The Hornets answered with 10 straight points, effectively landing the knockout punch in a 25-15 clincher.
Monika Burkholder (Linville, Va./Eastern Mennonite) led the way for the women with six kills and a .312 hitting percentage. The senior added a solo block and three block assists.
Rachel Lehman (Chambersburg, Pa./Shalom Christian Academy) had eight digs. Jessica Goertzen (Goessel, Ks./Goessel) had nine set assists and seven digs.
The women struggled with Lynchburg's serving and finished with 13 serve receive errors.
EMU goes to 1-15 with the loss, including 0-6 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Lady Royals stay at Yoder Arena for their next two matches, hosting Ferrum on Thursday and Mary Baldwin for Homecoming on Saturday.
