Box Score The Eastern Mennonite women's soccer team returned to Old Dominion Athletic Conference play Saturday, four days after a non-conference win over Shenandoah. The Lady Royals had a chance to build their first winning streak of the season, and did just that by topping Emory & Henry on the road, 2-0.
The Lady Royals put the pressure on early, outshooting their hosts 10-1 in the first 45 minutes. Despite all the good looks, the women couldn't score as the contest went into halftime tied at 0-0.
Finally in the 77th minute, EMU broke through. Erica Detweiler (Hickory, NC/Fred T. Foard) touched a pass to Laura Beckler (Richmond, Va./Atlee) who scored her first goal in a Lady Royals' uniform.
Ten minutes later the women were at it again. After Chaska Yoder (Plain City, Oh./Jonathan Alder) was taken down in the box, senior Melissa Miller (Bradenton, Fl./Lakewood Ranch) punched in the penalty kick to produce the final score, 2-0. For Miller, it was her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
The women outshot Emory & Henry 23-6 in the win, including 11-4 in shots on goal. Keeper Abby Diffenbach (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) gathered four saves. EMU also had a 5-0 edge in corner kicks.
Eastern Mennonite is now 3-6-1 with the win, including notching their first ODAC win at 1-3. They will try to maintain their momentum Wednesday with a road game at Sweet Briar.
