Box Score After a loss earlier this week at Bridgewater, the Lady Royals weren't sure what to expect entering Saturday night's game at home against Hollins. But the Eastern Mennonite women cleared up any worries by dominating from the opening whistle en route to a 7-2 rout of Hollins.
Despite controlling play from the first kick, EMU actually trailed early as Hollins scored on their first shot in the 16th minute.
But the women kept their solid play up and finally found the net in the 20th minute, as Melissa Miller (Bradenton, Fl./Lakewood Ranch) scored with an assist from Taylor Wenger (New Holland, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite).
Wenger picked up another assist six minutes later as she took a shot which Chaska Yoder (Plain City, Oh./Jonathan Alder) rebounded in. In the 37th minute, Wenger got a goal for herself, scoring on a pass from fellow freshman Laura Beckler (Richmond, Va./Atlee).
Sister Kori Wenger (New Holland, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) then got in on the fun, as she collected a hat trick of assists for her first points at EMU. She assisted Rachel Kennel (Parkesburg, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) in the 40th, Taylor Wenger early in the second half, and Beckler in the 57th minute.
Defender Jenna Arneson (Staunton, Va./Riverheads) made a run and scored without an assist in the 83rd minute.
Hollins added a late goal on a penalty kick as the Lady Royals cruised to a 7-2 victory.
Eastern Mennonite outshot their visitors 42-6 and also had a 10-1 edge in corners.
Abby Diffenbach (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) and Jenni Beck (Archbold, Oh./Archbold) split time in goal for the Lady Royals with each picking up one save.
Taylor Wenger finished with six points as she had two goals and two assists. Kori Wenger tied an EMU record as tallied three assists in the game and Beckler also finished with three points.
The win not only bumps the women to 5-7-2 overall and 3-4-1 in the ODAC, but it also helps them solidify their spot in the eight-team ODAC Tournament.
With three home games remaining on the slate, Eastern Mennonite holds eighth place with 10 points. Emory & Henry is behind the women with five points. Sixth place is within reach for the Lady Royals, as Guilford (11) and Randolph-Macon (12) are just slightly ahead of them.
EMU hosts Randolph (1-6-1 in the ODAC) on Tuesday, Oct. 19, before taking on Guilford and second-place Lynchburg to close the regular season.
