Soccer Women Score Twice Early To Beat Hornets
Ally Brown scored her second goal of the year as the Lady Royals won 2-1.
Since starting the season 0-2, the Lady Royals have been consistent. Very consistent. The soccer women are now 4-5 on the year and have won every other game since their Sept. 6 loss to Mary Washington. Wednesday they played at Shenandoah and kept with the pattern, winning 2-1.
Ally Brown (East Petersburg, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) got things started early. Shortly after a corner kick from
Meghan Lutz (Mt. Jackson, Va./Stonewall Jackson) the freshmen netted a goal at 13:33. Not to be out-done, speedy junior
Jess Myers (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) scored an unassisted goal of her own at 17:08, quickly pushing Eastern Mennonite to a 2-0 lead.
Shenandoah regrouped and surged back over the next 12 minutes. Nicole Gilbertson capped the push with a Hornet goal at 29:42, cutting EMU's lead in half.
Despite the three goals scored in a 16-minute window, neither team would score again.
Abby Diffenbach (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) made a pair of saves during a Shenandoah charge with 20 minutes left to play. Lutz nearly added a goal for the Lady Royals at 84:33 but had her shot bounce off the post.
EMU's defense held, though, as the Lady Royals came out with the 2-1 win.
Diffenbach finished with three saves. EMU had a 10-9 edge in shots. Shenandoah had more corner kicks (6-3) and fouls (12-4).
The Lady Royals up their record to 4-5 with the win and are 1-2 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play. The women return home Saturday, Oct. 3, with ODAC opponent Emory & Henry.
