The Eastern Mennonite soccer women hit the road for their Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener Saturday, playing at Guilford. The Quakers scored first in the contest and fended off the Lady Royals as EMU lost 2-1.

The two teams sailed through the first half scoreless, as EMU keeper Abby Diffenbach (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) made five saves in the frame.

In the second, Guilford moved quickly with Gabrielle Lahowitch scoring less than a minute in. At 71:32 Ashley Anderson netted a goal to make it 2-0.

But with two minutes, EMU cut the deficit in half. Showing the promise of some of the Lady's Royals young players, freshman Jenna Arneson (Staunton, Va./Riverheads) scored with an assist from freshman Taylor Sayre (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro) to make it 2-1.

Just as quickly as the scoring flurry started, it ended. The Quakers' defense kept EMU away from another shot, but the Lady Royals also kept Guilford out of the net. The game coasted through the final 17 minutes as Guilford claimed the win.

Diffenbach finished with eight saves and EMU was outshot 15-5.

The loss drops the Lady Royals to 2-4 on the year and 0-1 in the ODAC. EMU next plays Wednesday, Sept. 23 at Sweet Briar.
