Bridgewater College got a pair of buckets and a long ball from Jordan Burkholder in the final two minutes of the game to clinch a 62-59 conference win over the Eastern Mennonite University women's basketball team Tuesday night in Harrisonburg, Va.
The Eagles, which claim the season series over the Lady Royals, move to an even 9-9 on the season and 7-6 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Bridgewater College, which defeated EMU 61-56 on January 6, take both games of the cross-town rivalry by a combined eight points.
EMU drops to 12-7 on the year, 7-7 in the ODAC.
Ebony Dennis (Baltimore, Md./Western) set a new career-high with 19 points. The junior guard also registered a team leading eight rebounds to go along with six steals, the latter of which tied a career-high for the fourth time.
Local product Jordan Burkholder led all scorers with 22 points while tallying seven rebounds and six steals. Burkholder shot only 8-of-20 from the floor, but was 4-of-8 from behind the arc.
"For the second straight game we just did not play smart," commented head coach Kevin Griffin following the Lady Royals loss. "We played hard, harder then we did last Saturday, but we have to take care of the basketball and use our heads out there. Turnovers killed us tonight, especially towards the end of the game."
EMU committed a total of 22 turnovers compared to 14 for Bridgewater.
A leadoff long ball from Burkholder opening the scoring for BC as EMU responded on a jumper by
Danielle Scott (Summit, NJ/Summit). An 8-0 run by the visiting team, thanks to buckets from Burkholder and Jennifer Saunders moved the score to 11-2 before EMU closed the gap to one point two minutes later (11-10). EMU kept the game close as the Lady Royals were within one score on five different occasions. Bridgewater was able to build a modest five-point advantage on a pair of jumpers from Kristen Bosserman and Bianca Booker (38-33) as the teams headed into the locker room.
Bridgewater shot only 37 percent from the floor in the first half (15-of-40), with the Lady Royals netting a 50 percent mark from the floor (14-28). Turnovers again played a key factor in the stanza as BC scored eight points off an EMU miscue.
In the second frame the Lady Royals inched their way to only one point of the BC lead as a jumper from
Miranda Wolfe (Verona, Va./Fort Defiance) and two points from the charity stripe by
Melissa Lewis (Stuarts Draft, Va./Stuarts Draft) made the score 38-37, Eagles.
Bridgewater fought back, increasing their margin back to up six. EMU closed to only three points of the lead, but the Eagles answered with a pair of baskets to put the score at 49-42 with 10:45 remaining. The back-and-forth continued for the next two minutes until the Lady Royals were finally able to break though as Scott tied the contest on two free throw shots and then put EMU up by two on another pair from the charity stripe (51-49, 7:47 left).
Burkholder drove down the court on the Eagles' next possession and drained a contested jumper from the paint, knotting the score at 51. BC then pushed themselves back on top by four (55-51) only to have the Lady Royals offense come up with a 5-0 swing, keyed by a Dennis long ball, to take their second lead of the game.
With EMU maintaining a slim one point lead (56-55), Bridgewater took control and kept the home team off the scoreboard for the next 3:28 while igniting a 7-0 run that put the Eagles up 62-56. With the clock dwindling down to only 56 seconds remaining, EMU finally cut into the BC lead on a three-pointer from Lewis. Unfortunately for EMU fans, the Eagles were able to hold off the late charge as the Lady Royals were unable to get down the court in the final seconds of the game as Burkholder tipped an EMU pass away as the clock struck zero.
Scott had 10 points and eight boards. Lewis finished with nine points, six rebounds, and six assists.
Saunders had 14 points and nine rebounds for BC.
The Lady Royals will now face-off against the Wasps of Emory & Henry College on Friday, February 6, at 7 p.m., in their next contest.
