Lady Royals Fall To ODAC-Leading Generals
Keeper Abby Diffenbach made 10 saves but couldn't stop a 3-0 loss to Washington & Lee.
After picking up impressive wins over Shenandoah and Emory & Henry, EMU's women's soccer team was rewarded with the ODAC leaders, Washington & Lee. The Generals were 6-0 in league play, and made it 7-0 by handing Eastern Mennonite a 3-0 loss.
The Generals patiently worked their offense and struck first when Allie Espina picked up a rebounded shot and fired it past keeper
Abby Diffenbach (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) at 12:48.
EMU forward
Jess Myers (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) got a chance a couple of minutes later, but Emily Leary made the save for Washington & Lee.
At 37:50,
Taylor Sayre (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro) lofted a shot, but Leary was again there for the save. The Generals got their second goal at 39:57, as Roz Klann scored to make it 2-0 at halftime.
The Lady Royals made a charge midway through the second half, but a shot from
Christa Beckler (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) was stopped. Washington & Lee struck once more as Taylor Garrett knocked one home at 77:47, producing the final 3-0 deficit.
Diffenbach made 10 saves in the game as EMU was outshot 20-5. The Generals had more corners (10-3) and fouls (7-2).
The loss drops EMU back below .500 at 5-6 and 2-3 in the ODAC. The women play on the road Saturday, Oct. 10, at Virginia Wesleyan.
