Marlins Control Second Half To End EMU's Season
Keeper Abby Diffenbach kept EMU in the contest against top-seeded Virginia Wesleyan as she made 10 saves.
The Lady Royals did what they were supposed to, weathering a season full of injuries to make their way into the postseason. The tall task in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament, however, was speedy Virginia Wesleyan, the top seed with a 15-3 overall record. Eastern Mennonite held with the Marlins in the first half but the second half turned into a 3-0 season-ending loss for EMU.
The Lady Royals weathered an initial surge from Virginia Wesleyan in the ODAC quarterfinal game before settling in and playing evenly with the home team. Despite being outshot 10-4 in the first 45 minutes, EMU hung with the Marlins and went into halftime scoreless.
Virginia Wesleyan turned up the heat in the second half and broke through with a Kelly Higgins goal at 61:15. It stayed 1-0 for the next 18 minutes until Nicki Mazzoccone nailed a penalty kick for the Marlins in the 80th minute.

Valerie Burton (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance) sat out most of the second half after injuring her knee.
Abby Diffenbach (Lancaster, Va./Lancaster Mennonite) grabbed 10 saves in the loss as EMU was outshot 32-6.
Jess Myers (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) had the only shot on goal for the women.
The Lady Royals end their year with a 7-11 record after the loss in the conference quarterfinals. Four seniors played their final game for EMU: Burton,
Mary Dunn (Dalton, Oh./Central Christian),
Christa Beckler (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee), and
Stephanie Kanagy (Timberville, Va./Broadway).
