Lady Royals Control From Start To Finish In 6-0 Win
Freshman Meghan Lutz scored twice in the first half as EMU dominated Emory & Henry, 6-0.
After trading wins and losses for a month, the Lady Royals broke their streak Saturday. Fortunately, they broke it the right way - by winning two games in a row - and they did it in a big way, dominating Emory & Henry 6-0 in Harrisonburg. The win also gives EMU its first winning streak of the season.
Aside from a 4-1 win over Susquehanna on Sept. 12, the most EMU had scored in a game was twice. In the win over Emory & Henry, the women scored twice by the 31st minute.
Meghan Lutz (Mt. Jackson, Va./Stonewall Jackson) got the ball rolling just 1:36 into the game as she took a cross from
Christa Beckler (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) and stuck it past the Wasps' keeper.
Eastern Mennonite continued to control play and finally scored again at 30:31.
Mary Dunn (Dalton, Oh./Central Christian) drove to the goal line and lofted a cross which
Jess Myers (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) banged home. Nine minutes later, Lutz scored again on a direct kick from just outside the box to make it 3-0.
With the impressive first half, the Lady Royals quickly re-established their momentum in the second. At 50:44, Myers dribbled right up the middle of the Emory & Henry defense and found a wide open Beckler on the left side for an easy goal.
Seven minutes later, EMU was at it again as
Taylor Sayre (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro) popped a shot over the keeper's head to make it 5-0. Within seconds, the women scored again, as Beckler charged the Wasps' keeper as she was trying to clear a pass. Beckler deflected the kick and it bounced right back into the goal.
Emory & Henry picked up their intensity late in the game, but the Lady Royals defense held up and preserved the shutout.
EMU outshot the Wasps 18-13, including 10-6 in shots on goal.
Abby Diffenbach (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) made a few nice stops and finished with six saves.
The win evens the women's record at 5-5 overall and at 2-2 in ODAC play. EMU hosts conference-leading Washington & Lee on Wednesday, Oct. 7.
