Lady Royals Dominate Randolph In Final Home Game
Freshman Taylor Sayre led EMU with 16 shots, including the game-winner in the 66th minute.
Having lost four straight, the Lady Royals needed a win in a bad way. And despite just two substitutes to start Wednesday's game against Randolph, Eastern Mennonite went on the attack. The Lady Royals' aggressive play controlled the game, but it took a second half goal for the women to take a 1-0 win.
EMU had just two subs in the game, and one was Katrina Goering (Columbus, Oh./Grandview Heights), who was trying to regain game stamina after missing seven games with an injury. The Lady Royals dominated play in the first half firing 26 shots to just one for the WildCats.
Victoria Johnson, however, made 14 saves in the half and kept the contest scoreless.
The women continued to pepper shots in the second half, but couldn't break through. With 35 minutes left to play, EMU made a switch in strategy as senior Valerie Burton (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance) moved to an offensive position and Amber Shelly (Bluffton, Oh./Bluffton) slid back to the sweeper position, adding some urgency to the game.
After 34 shots, the Lady Royals finally broke through on their 35th attempt as Taylor Sayre (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro) dribbled past a pair of defenders and knocked home the game's only goal.
EMU continued firing shots, trying to add another goal. Only a number of good saves from Johnson kept the Lady Royals from blowing the game open. Randolph's keeper finished with 27 saves, but EMU got the 1-0 win.
The women outshot the WildCats 49-3 in the game, just nine shots off EMU's record of 58. The Lady Royals put 28 shots on goal.
Junior Abby Diffenbach (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) made three great saves in the win, keeping the visitors from sneaking in a goal on one of their few but quality chances.
The win ends EMU's losing streak and puts their record at 6-9 and 3-6 in ODAC play. The Lady Royals take over sole possession of eighth place in the league standings as both Emory & Henry and Hollins lost Wednesday.
The women play at third-place Lynchburg Saturday, Oct. 24, close the season at Hollins on Tuesday, Oct. 27.
