With the rest of campus celebrating Homecoming Saturday, the Eastern Mennonite women's soccer team made the long trek to Virginia Wesleyan to hook up with the Marlins. The Lady Royals played even with the talented home team in the second half, but suffered the defeat after giving up three first-half goals.

The Marlins bit early, scoring on Bonnie Braziel's header after a corner kick just 2:28 into the contest. Virginia Wesleyan ended up controlling the first half of play, holding EMU without a shot while continually funneling in substitutes to keep their players fresh.

In the 34th minute Virginia Wesleyan repeated its first goal, as Blaze Byrd scored on a header after a corner kick. Two minutes later, the Marlins made it a team hat trick, scoring their third header after a corner kick.

The Lady Royals solidified their defense on the corners by the second half, but couldn't overcome the damage. Courtney Shifflet (Waynesboro, Va./Riverheads) and Jess Myers (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) each fired a shot on the goal in the second half, but EMU couldn't crack the net.

Abby Diffenbach (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) tallied ten saves in the 3-0 loss, as EMU was outshot 26-3. Virginia Wesleyan also had more corners, 9-1, and fouls, 9-4.

The loss drops EMU to 5-7 overall and 2-4 in the ODAC. EMU tries to snap its two-game skid Tuesday, Oct. 13, at Bridgewater.
