Danielle Scott (Summit, NJ/Summit) poured in 16 of her team-high 26 points in the second half but the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins held on for a 75-68 conference win over the Eastern Mennonite University women's basketball team Saturday afternoon in Virginia Beach, Va.
The Marlins improve to 13-5 on the season and 10-3 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. EMU drops to 12-6, 7-6 in the conference.
Marla Young (Fishersville, Va./Wilson Memorial) added 14 points and was 6-of-6 from the charity stripe.

The Marlins were paced by 16 points from Andrea Ushinski. Jill Weston had 15 points and four rebounds. Tonia Jones (11 points) and Kristina Jameson (10 points) also scored in double figures for Virginia Wesleyan.
The Lady Royals answered the first two buckets of the game by Virginia Wesleyan and tied the game on both occasions on jumpers by Scott and Snyder. A long ball by Ushinski put the Marlins up three (7-4, 17:03) where the home team stayed for the remainder of the half. VWC pushed their advantage to as much as 21 points at the 3:57 mark before heading into the half with a 43-26 lead.
Ushinski totaled 11 points in the first half on 4-of-6 shooting from the field.
In the second stanza the Marlins looked to pull away from the Lady Royals only to have EMU responded late in the half. Trailing 54-34 with 14:45 remaining, the Lady Royals went on a 22-10 run to close the gap to six and make the score 64-58 (4:04).
No one scored over the next 45 seconds until a jumper by Jones put Virginia Wesleyan back up by eight. EMU responded on a layup by Scott only to have VWC answer on their next possession with a layup plus one. A three-pointer by Snyder dropped the deficit back down to six for the visiting team (71-65) with 36 seconds left in regulation. Two free throw shots by Ushinski and a follow-up long ball from
Melissa Lewis (Stuarts Draft, Va./Stuarts Draft) saw the lead whittled down to five (73-68, 17 seconds). The Lady Royals, forced to foul in an effort to get the ball back, saw the Marlins hit one-of-two free throw attempts on their next two possessions to keep EMU at bay.
Young scored nine of her 14 points in the second half. Lewis finished with nine points, six rebounds, and four assists in the loss.
EMU will look to get back on track next week as the Lady Royals play host to their cross-town rivals from Bridgewater College on Tuesday, February 3, at 7 p.m., for the start of a four-game homestand.
