Roanoke College scored 35 second half points in route to a 68-50 Old Dominion Athletic Conference win over Eastern Mennonite University Saturday afternoon in women's basketball action.
Roanoke improves to 11-2 overall and 7-2 in the ODAC.
EMU falls to 10-4 on the season, 5-4 in the conference.
The Lady Royals were led by sophomore guard
Brittany Snyder (Raphine, Va./Riverheads) who dropped in a team-high 20 points and was 6-of-6 from behind the arc.
Danielle Scott (Summit, NJ/Summit) and
Miranda Wolfe (Verona, Va./Fort Defiance) each scored eight points.
The Maroons were led by Erin Jenkins with 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field. Jordan Gholson had a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards while Caitlyn Long registered 12 points and five assists.
"Roanoke shot lights out tonight and we just could not get a stop," commented head coach Kevin Griffin. "We couldn't score for about seven minutes in the second half, and a lot of that is to their credit."
EMU never trailed in the first half as Snyder drained two three-pointers to start the game, putting the visiting team up 6-4. A Jenkins' jumper was answered by a bucket from Scott as the two teams traded baskets until the 13:54 mark. EMU, up by only two (12-10), got a long ball from Melissa Lewis to push the advantage to five with two points from the charity stripe by Lewis and another three from Snyder moved the Roanoke deficit to 10 (20-10, 11:53 remaining). The Maroons closed to within five of the lead before heading into the locker room down 36-30.
Snyder scored 12 of her 20 points in the first half.
Melissa Lewis (Stuarts Draft, Va./Stuarts Draft) scored seven points in the half while recording four assists.
The second half started out like the first with the Royals scoring early and often. EMU moved their lead back up to 10 points (42-32) on a free throw shot by Wolfe. From that point on it was all down hill for the Lady Royals as a Gholson jumper keyed a 8-0 run by the home team. Following a basket by Wolfe, Jenkins dropped in one of her six threes on the day to make the score 44-43, EMU. Virginia Ann Hagood put the home team up for good on a follow-up basket with Jenkins adding another three.
Roanoke, up 48-44 with 11:58 left, increased its lead to nine on a Hagood layup and then put the Lady Royals down by 11 on a Long jumper. Jenkins closed out the game and iced the win for Roanoke as she nailed her final three on the day with 1:10 remaining.
The Roanoke defense held the Lady Royals to only 14 points in the second half as EMU shot only 20 percent from the floor (5-of-25). Roanoke was 8-of-11 from behind the arc in the second half.
Hagood finished with 10 points and two rebounds.
The Lady Royals will look to rebound against Randolph College on Friday, January 23, at 7 p.m.
