Bethany Ridenhour hit a last second three-pointer to propel the Washington & Lee University Generals to a 71-69 road win over the Eastern Mennonite University women's basketball team Tuesday night in Harrisonburg, Va.
Washington & Lee improves to 5-6 on the season and 5-2 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. EMU falls to 10-3 overall, 5-3 in the conference.
Ridenhour finished with eight points while a host of W&L players reached double figures in the contest. Felice Herman led all scorers with 20 points while Meghan Ingram (15 points) and newly minted ODAC Player of the Week Rebecca Bolton (14 points, 11 assists) also contributed to the General offensive attack.
EMU was led by 17 points from sophomore guard
Brittany Snyder (Raphine, Va./Riverheads).
Danielle Scott (Summit, NJ/Summit) scored 16 points and pulled in eight boards while
Ebony Dennis (Baltimore, Md./Western) had her third double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Melissa Lewis (Stuarts Draft, Va./Stuarts Draft) registered a career high 13 points to go along with five assists and three rebounds.
"While they (Washington & Lee) played really, really well, we just didn't get back on defense and help ourselves out," commented head coach Kevin Griffin following the game. "Give them all the credit, they came down the court and hit their shots. We played pretty hard, but we were late several times getting back on defense."
Neither team was able to gain a strong foothold on the lead in the first half. A 4-0 start by the Generals was answered with a 5-0 swing by the home team. This continued for most of the half until the final three minutes when EMU was able to build a seven-point advantage as the teams headed into the locker room.
Ingram led the way for the Generals with 12 points including a 2-for-5 line from behind the arc.
The second half was more of the same as the seven-point deficit for Washington & Lee dissapated over the first few minutes as the Generals got a pair of layups from Herman and Bolton. The visiting team appeared to be marching closer to tying the game but a pair of free throws by Scott ignited a 7-0 run for the Lady Royals that pushed the lead back up to nine (47-38, 13:11 left).
EMU held at least a five point lead for the next four minutes until a Allie Long three cut the advantage to only two (56-54, 8:12 remaining). Herman followed the Long three-pointer with a basket, tying the game at 56 all. The Lady Royals then went on a 4-0 run thanks to a jumper from Snyder and another two points from the charity stripe from Scott. Washington & Lee, as they had all game, responded with two free throw shots of their own, cutting the margin in half.
The battle ensued as the home team was able to go up 66-60 with 3:55 left on the clock. Bolton and Lewis exchanged buckets that kept EMU ahead by six (68-62) but Ridenhour, who had only scored two points until this point, came to life with a long ball at the 1:47 mark, putting the visiting Generals down only three. Following a couple of missed opportunities on the home half of the court, Long got the dish from Ingram and hit the game tying three with 20 ticks left. W&L fouled on EMU's next possession with the Lady Royals hitting 1-of-2 attempts to make the score 69-68. As the clock wound down the Generals fed the ball to Long on the in-bound and she quickly fed Ridenhour who drained the contested three-pointer with only one second left. EMU threw up a long ball that sailed short of the net, giving the Lady Royals only their second home loss of the season.
Long finished with six points and two assists.
EMU will look to rebound on the road as they travel to Roanoke, Va., on Saturday, January 17, to take on the Maroons at 4 p.m.
