Junior Kathryn Taylor (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) and freshman Tabitha Bowman (Waynesboro, Va./Stuarts Draft) each recorded six kills as the Eastern Mennonite University women's volleyball team defeated Mary Baldwin College 3-0 Wednesday night.

The Lady Royals now stand at 3-2 as they prepare for the Gettysburg College Tournament on Saturday, September 6.

Mary Baldwin falls to 0-5.

"Overall it was a good team performance and we were able to work on a few adjustments from the tournament matches," commented EMU head coach Steve Benson.

Colena Robers led the Fighting Squirrels with seven kills and 12 digs while Kim Clum (10) and Carla Hill (11) also registered double digits in digs.

Sophomore libero Jenny Blosser (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) and Bowman each recorded 12 digs for EMU with junior setter Christine Bottles (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) tallying eight assists.

The Lady Royals used a balance attack in set one as Bowman collected four points in 10 attempts along with eight digs. EMU took a one game lead but the Fighting Squirrels lived up to their team moniker and fought back to take a 12-9 lead in set two. Mary Baldwin held on to their three point lead until the 13th point when the Lady Royals were able to tie the game and then pull ahead on two MBC attack errors.

The visiting team responded, tying the game at 19 all, until a kill by sophomore middle Monika Burkholder (Linville, Va./Eastern Mennonite) put the Lady Royals on top. The Fighting Squirrels were only able to muster one more point in set two as EMU went on for a 25-21 win.

Set three featured another early advantage by Mary Baldwin with the visiting team reaching a 4-2 lead. EMU, as they had done earlier, battled back to take a 8-7 lead and eventually take the set and match in three.

Burkholder ended the night with three kills, a solo block, and two assisted blocks.
