The first home game of the 2008 season saw the Eastern Mennonite University women's soccer team get a goal from
Valerie Brubaker (Quarryville, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) in route to a 1-0 shut-out win over Guilford College Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Royals improve to .500 on the season at 3-3 and 1-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
Guilford falls to 2-5 overall, 1-1 in the conference.
The goal by Brubaker came in the fourth minute of play as she was able to sneak one by goalkeeper Amber Stapler after Stapler deflected a shot by
Katie Lamm (Newmanstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon Co.).
The game remained 1-0 through regulation due in part to a stingy EMU defense. Led by
Susannah Wirick (West Libery, Ohio/West Liberty-Salem),
Mattie Horning (Morgantown, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite),
Kelsey Yoder (Canby, Ore./Canby) and
Valerie Burton (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance) the Lady Royals were able to thwart several Quaker attempts throughout the first and second period. Guilford out-shot EMU 6-4 in the second period with two shots on goal coming within the final four minutes of regulation.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Abi Diffenbach (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) recorded her second shut-out of the season and had five saves in the win.
Stapler had six saves for GC.
The Vixens of Sweet Briar College will be next up for the Lady Royals as they head to Park View on Tuesday, September 23, for a 7:30 p.m., ODAC match.
