Julie Denlinger (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) and
Alyssa Derstine (Telford, Pa./Christopher Dock) each scored a goal in the first period as the Eastern Mennonite University field hockey team defeated Lynchburg College 2-0 Friday night on the EMU Turf Field.
The win pushes the Lady Royals record to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in the ODAC.
Lynchburg falls to 3-4 on the season and 0-1 in the conference.
"Its great pick up a tough win against a team like Lynchburg," commented EMU head coach Brenda Bechler. "Our defense made some outstanding saves in the second period to pick us up."
EMU struck early in the first period with Denlinger recording her fifth goal of the season off a corner at the 1:17 mark.
Derstine followed almost eight minutes later with her team leading eighth goal of the season, pushing the EMU lead to 2-0.
The Lady Royals had six shots total in the first period compared to five for Lynchburg. The Hornets had a slim 6-5 lead in penalty corners.
After the two quick goals the visiting Hornets settled down and began to press the EMU defense. Lynchburg held possession for most of the second period in the EMU side of the field with several chances coming up short. The Hornets had a string of four shots in a row saved by
Becky Nolt (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs), who later deflected a potential score by LC off a corner.
Lynchburg continued to push deep into Lady Royal territory with the Hornets getting 13 shots off in the second frame compared to only two for EMU.
Allie Weir had a team high five shots, three on goal, while Kristina Morris also had three shots on goal.
Nolt finished with a season high 10 saves.
Hailee Rittle (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) assisted on both goals while
Kristina Landis (Harleysville, Pa./Christopher Dock) helped to set up the Derstine goal.
EMU will return to action next week as the Lady Royals travel to Roanoke, Va., to take on the Maroons on Friday, September 26, at 7 p.m.
