The Eastern Mennonite University women's basketball team got a chance to redeem themselves after a tough loss to Emory & Henry College on Friday and came out with a vengeance as the Lady Royals took care of business at home and defeated Guilford College, 78-56.
The win gives the Lady Royals a record of 16-5 overall and 12-4 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference while Guilford falls to 10-11 overall and 5-11 in the conference.
Junior forward
Carolyn Riley (Warrenton, Va./Liberty-Bealeton), who was honored before the game as she scored her 1,000 career point the night before, led all scorers with 24 points on 11-of-16 from the floor. Freshman guard
Brittany Snyder (Raphine, Va./Riverheads) had another 11 points off the bench for EMU.
Tracey Croner had 16 points to lead the Quakers with Lauren LaFevers chipping in another 14 points for GC.
EMU opened up a five point lead with 1:42 off the clock in the first half as sophomore guard
Ebony Dennis (Baltimore, Md./Western) stroked a three-pointer with an assist from senior guard
Dana Powell (Roanoke, Va./Northside). The lead grew to 10 with 14:04 remaining in the half and eventually ballooned up to 22 with senior guard
Tara Jones (Richmond, Va./Meadowbrook) adding a trey of her own.
The three-pointer from Jones did not fluster Jasmine Wood as the Guilford guard cut the Lady Royals lead down by two with a bucket on the Quakers next possession. EMU returned the favor with a layup from sophomore forward
Lele Shumate (McDowell, Va./Highland Co.) before heading into the locker room with a 42-19 lead.
Riley had 18 points in the first half and was 9-of-11 from the field while collecting two steals. Dennis had five points, four assists, and four rebounds in the half and finished the game with three steals.
EMU continued to hold Guilford at bay in the second half as the Quakers were unable to get a rally going to cut into the Royal lead. A free throw by Destiny Carden put Guilford down by only 21 with 16:50 remaining, but the Lady Royals again answered with a bucket from Riley with EMU eventually claiming the win.
Senior center
Jolene Kratz (Telford, Pa./Christopher Dock) had six points and seven rebounds with Shumate adding another seven points for EMU.
The Lady Royals shot 50 percent from the field tonight (29-of-57) as compared to 35 percent (21-of-59) for the Quakers. EMU also out rebounded Guilford 43-31.
EMU will travel to Lexington, Va., on Wednesday, February 14, as the Lady Royals take on the Generals of Washington & Lee. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
