The Bridgewater College Eagles will move on to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Semifinal round as they edged out the Eastern Mennonite University women's basketball team, 51-47, Thursday night in Salem, Va., in the Salem Civic Center.

The 2007-08 season comes to a close for the Lady Royals who finish with a 19-7 overall record and a 15-5 mark in the ODAC. The 19 wins by EMU marks the highest total since the team went to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen during the 2003-04 season.

Bridgewater will now play Randolph-Macon College on Saturday, March 1, at 3 p.m., as the Yellow Jackets defeated Washington & Lee in their quarterfinal match-up.

Senior center Jolene Kratz (Telford, Pa./Christopher Dock) led the team with 14 points while pulling down six rebounds while junior forward Carolyn Riley (Warrenton, Va./Liberty-Bealeton) and sophomore guard Melissa Lewis (Stuarts Draft, Va./Stuarts Draft) each had 11 points in the loss.

Turner Ashby High grad Jordan Burkholder had a team leading 14 points for the Eagles and was 6-of-6 from the charity stripe with Jessica Timberlake adding another 11 points to the BC offense.

The Lady Royals had 20 steals in the game, but turned the ball over 25 times, thier second highest output this season. EMU, which beat Bridgewater in both regular season games, shot only 30 percent from the floor in the first half (8-of-26) and only 32 percent (17-of-52) for the game.

"We couldn't run a play, and there was a long stretch in the game where we didn't even get a shot off," commented EMU head coach Kevin Griffin following the loss.

EMU scored only 21 points in the first half but Bridgewater also struggled to find a rythem as the Eagles went into the locker room ahead by only four points (25-21). BC shot 34 percent in the first stanza (8-23) with Burkholder leading the squad with eight points.

In the second half the Lady Royals were able to gain some momentum and pull to only two points of tying the contest as Kratz sank both free throw attempts, making the score 27-25 with 19:19 remaining. A 4-0 run by BC shot the lead back up to seven with Lewis knocking down one of her two treys to drop the deficit back down to four (14:35 on clock). Bridgewater then went on another scoring run as the Eagles increased their advantage to 10 (9:57) on a jumper by Jennifer Saunders to put the Lady Royals on their heels. EMU did not go away quietly as the Lady Royals stormed back with Riley, Miranda Wolfe (Verona, Va./Fort Defiance), Ebony Dennis (Baltimore, Md./Western), and Kratz keying a 9-0 run that moved the home team to only one point of the lead (1:31).

Following an EMU timeout, Timberlake drained a big basket for the Eagles as the scored moved to 47-44 in favor of Bridgewater. EMU cut it down to two points but free throws from Nikki Snydor and Burkholder iced the win for BC.

Snydor had six points and five rebounds for the Eagles with Saunders coming off the bench to add another 10 points.
