For the second time this season the Lynchburg College Hornets stop a winning streak by the Eastern Mennonite University women's basketball team as the Hornets beat the Lady Royals 66-39 Saturday afternoon to sweep the season series.

EMU falls to 14-4 overall and 10-3 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference while Lynchburg improves to 12-6 on the year and 9-4 in the conference.

"They just out played us from the beginning and we could not run our offense all game," commented EMU head coach Kevin Griffin. "They seemed to hit every basket in the first half and when we went up 7-2 on fouls it allowed them to be even more aggressive. It was like a repeat game from when we played them at home where they just came out from the beginning and seemed to want it more than we did."

Senior guard Tara Jones (Richmond, Va./Meadowbrook) led the visiting Royals with 11 points and eight rebounds while senior center Jolene Kratz (Telford, Pa./Christopher Dock) had 10 points and seven boards.

Lynchburg had four players score in double figures with Brittany Dahn leading the pack with 16 points and seven rebounds. Kristina Darby had 13 points while Courtney Brewer (12 points), and Dana Esposito (11 points) added to the LC offensive attack.

The lead changed hands three times in the first six minutes of the game with Lynchburg pulling away at the 12:26 mark in the half on a jumper by Brewer that put the home team up by four. EMU responded with a layup from Kratz before a bucket from Dahn and a trey from Esposito increased the Hornet lead to six with 6:52 remaining. The Lady Royals tried to stay close but Lynchburg began to take advantage of an EMU team that had 14 turnovers and shot only 25 percent in the first half to take a 34-17 lead into the break.

Lynchburg continued to add to their lead in the second frame with the home team going up by 19 on another bucket from Esposito (18:29 on clock). EMU countered and went on a 6-0 run with baskets from Kratz and sophomore guard Ebony Dennis (Baltimore, Md./Western) and two free throws from junior forward Carolyn Riley (Warrenton, Va./Liberty-Bealeton) to cut the deficit to 38-25 (16:58 remaining).

The Hornets continued to sting the Lady Royals from behind the arc and shot their advantage back up to 16 on a trey from Esposito in their next possession. Lynchburg finished the contest shooting 9-of-18 from behind the arc while EMU was only 2-of-13. The Lady Royals did not fare any better from inside the arch as they were again held to only 25 percent from the floor (7-of-27) with Lynchburg pulling away to claim the win.

Dennis had four points, seven rebounds, and two steals for EMU with Riley adding four points and seven boards in the loss.

EMU will stay on the road as the Lady Royals take on Hollins University on Tuesday, February 5, for a 7 p.m. game.
