The Generals of Washington & Lee defended their home turf Tuesday afternoon as they improve to 8-3 overall and 6-1 in the conference following a 3-0 decision over the Eastern Mennonite University women's soccer team.
EMU drops to 6-4 overall on the season and 4-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The loss snaps the Lady Royals six-game winning streak, dating back to a September 6, win over Greensboro College.
"The took some great shots at us from outside the box," commented EMU head coach Holly Hall. "We just didn't possess the ball like we need to in order to win."
The Generals held the Lady Royals to only two shots the entire game with Washington & Lee registering 15 shots on goal. W&L also had 11 corner kicks on the day.
Maggie Sutherland put the Generals up 1-0 midway through the first period as she recorded an unassisted goal, her fourth of the year.
Following the half, Kat Barnes and Allie Espina put up scores to seal the win for Washington & Lee.
EMU keeper
Abi Diffenbach (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) had 10 saves against the Generals, the third time this year she has reached the double-digit save plateau.
Diffenbach ranks third in the conference in save percentage (.837) and is fourth in shutouts (four).
The Lady Royals will now wait for Saturday, October 11, to get back on track as they host the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan at 7 p.m., under the lights of the EMU Turf Field. Saturday will also be homecoming on campus as women's volleyball (12 p.m., Yoder Arena), men's soccer (1 p.m.), and field hockey (4 p.m.) will proceed the women's soccer match.
