Meredith Grunewald ended the women's soccer match with a 97th minute goal in overtime as Roanoke College defeated the Eastern Mennonite University Lady Royals 1-0 Saturday afternoon in Salem, Va.

Roanoke improves to 7-6-2 overall and 5-2-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

EMU drops to 7-6 on the season, 5-2 in the conference.

Abi Diffenbach (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) had nine saves in the loss.

The Lady Royals hung with the Maroons even with the home team holding a 17-5 margin in shots at the end of regulation. Roanoke also had six corner kicks compared to only two for EMU in 90 minutes of play.

As the game headed into overtime, EMU was granted a scoring opportunity in the 96th minute on a corner kick. The Maroons defended the play and then brought the ball down the field, giving Grunewald a tough one-on-one chance against Diffenbach.

The goal by Grunewald was the 11th of the season for the senior midfielder.

The Lady Royals will travel down to Lynchburg, Va., on Wednesday, October 22, as they take on Randolph College at 4 p.m.
