#4 Virginia Wesleyan put a damper on Homecoming festivities at Eastern Mennonite University as the Marlins held the women's soccer team scoreless for 90 minutes to collect a 2-0 decision Saturday night in Harrisonburg, Va.
The Marlins move to 7-1-3 overall in 2008 and 6-0-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
EMU drops to 6-5 on the season, 4-2 in the conference.
Virginia Wesleyan scored a goal each in the first and second periods as Courtney Wharton had her shot get deflected by EMU keeper
Abi Diffenbach (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite), yet break the plane of the goal, giving the Marlins the 1-0 lead (30:24).
Wharton was assisted by Danielle Fielder.
Fielder was also involved in the second score of the game in the 64th minute as she fed the ball to Stacy Zeiler, standing at the top of the circle, with Zeiler launching a shot that just bent over the outstretched arms of Diffenbach.
Virginia Wesleyan held EMU to only two shots while registering 25 of their own. The Marlins also had a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The women's soccer team will return to the turf on Wednesday, October 15, as they host cross-town rival Bridgewater College in an ODAC battle scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
