After struggling in the first half trying to find their shot, the Eastern Mennonite University women's basketball team recovered in the second half to capture a 58-47 conference win over Guilford College Friday night in Greensboro, N.C.

With the win, the Lady Royals record now stands at 10-3 overall and 6-2 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference while Guilford falls to 9-4 on the year and 5-4 in the ODAC.

"We could not get anything to fall in the first half and we just really struggled to find our shot," commented EMU head coach Kevin Griffin. "What saved us was our free throw shooting, especially in the second half."

Sophomore guard Ebony Dennis (Baltimore, Md./Western) was 5-of-9 from the field for a team high 14 points while pulling down eight boards. Dennis also had six assists and four steals against the Quakers and hit the go-ahead three-pointer with 3:11 on the clock in the second half to seal the win for EMU.

Senior center Jolene Kratz (Telford, Pa./Christopher Dock) and junior forward Carolyn Riley (Warrenton, Va./Liberty-Bealeton) each had 13 points with Kratz falling one rebound shy of her second double double of the year.

The Lady Royals quickly scored the first basket of the game with only five seconds off the clcok on a layup by Kratz and later went up by four points (18:25). Free throw shots by Tracey Croner and a bucket from Alexa Williams tied the game with the home team eventually moving ahead by as much as eight. The lead grew to nine with 2:21 remaining in the half until Dennis hit a trey and added two baskets from the charity stripe following a steal to cut the deficit to four. Guilford tacked on a jumper from Denae Caudle just before the half to enter the break with a 28-22 lead.

Croner had 10 points in the first half for GC on 4-of-6 shooting from the field with Williams pulling down eight rebounds.

Baskets from Kratz, Dennis, and senior guard Dana Powell (Roanoke, Va./Northside) quickly tied the game with only two minutes off the clock in the second half. The lead then changed seven times in the next 15 minutes with neither team able to build a comfortable lead.

After trading foul shots, EMU began to pull away as Dennis hit a crucial three-pointer late to put the visiting Lady Royals ahead by two. A layup by Riley and two free throws by sophomore guard Melissa Lewis (Stuarts Draft, Va./Stuarts Draft) increased the lead to six and the comeback was on. Riley followed with another two free throws but the Quakers did not go away quietly as Ann Seufer hit a big trey to cut the EMU lead to five with 1:09 remaining. GC put the Lady Royals on the line and Riley responded as she again hit both attempts with the Quakers unable to answer back.

Senior guard Tara Jones (Richmond, Va./Meadowbrook) also hit two key free throws for EMU in the final minutes of the game and finished with eight points and six rebounds.

The Lady Royals shot only 23 percent in the first half as compared to 40 percent in the second. Guilford had just the opposite as the Quakers shot 43 percent in the first frame followed by 20 percent in the second. GC also out rebounded EMU by a slim 46-43 margin.

EMU will now travel to Emory, Va., as the Lady Royals will take on the Wasps of Emory & Henry College on Saturday, January 19, at 4 p.m.
