Brittany Dahn led all scorers with 17 points and 11 rebounds as Lynchburg College moved to 6-3 overall and 3-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference following a 68-55 win over the Eastern Mennonite University women's basketball team Friday night in Yoder Arena.
The loss drops the Lady Royals to 7-3 on the year and 3-2 in the ODAC. EMU shot just 36 percent from the field in the game including a 3-for-17 line from behind the arc. Junior forward
Carolyn Riley (Warrenton, Va./Liberty-Bealeton) had 14 points and nine rebounds in the loss with senior
Tara Jones (Richmond, Va./Meadowbrook) adding another 13 points to the Royals attack.
"We played hard but not smart," commented EMU head coach Kevin Griffin. "They (Lynchburg) defended us well and we just couldn't get a stop against them. Dahn was terrific and they did a great job of finding her on offense and attacking the basket."
Lynchburg started off with a 5-0 run in the first half with EMU struggling to find its shot on offense. The Lady Royals tied the game at 13 all before a 14-0 run by Lynchburg gave the lead back to the Hornets.
Dahn had six points in the half for LC with Kristina Darby and Chevonne Booker each tallying five.
EMU closed the gap down to six with Jones adding a layup in the final minute of the half to send the Lady Royals into the locker room on the short end of a 36-30 score.
The Lady Royals chipped away at the Lynchburg lead to start the second half with Jones again adding another layup to cut the lead to four. The margin closed to one-point on two free throw shots by Riley with Dahn later adding two baskets from the candy stripe to push the advantage back up to three.
Lynchburg continued to press on defense, forcing eight EMU turnovers, with the Lady Royals still unable to find their stroke on offense. Dahn seemingly put the game out of reach on a three-pointer to give Lynchburg a 10-point lead with 12:24 left on the clock. The Lady Royals got to within single digits (6:24 on clock) of the Hornets but were unable to solve a tough LC defense with a bucket from Kelly Sutherland and free throws by Loriann Garcia giving the Hornets the eventual win.
Courtney Brewer and Sutherland each had 10 points off the bench for LC with Darby finishing the game with 12 points, four rebounds, and two steals.
Senior center
Jolene Kratz (Telford, Pa./Christopher Dock) had 12 points and eight boards for EMU in the loss.
"We just couldn't pressure them enough on defense and on top of that we didn't shoot well at all," added Griffin. "We can't expect to win ball games not attacking the basket and having only nine free throw attempts in the game."
The Lady Royals will host Hollins University tomorrow, January 12, as tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
