Behind the play of Stephanie Owen the Emory & Henry College women's volleyball team defeated Eastern Mennonite University 3-0 Saturday afternoon in Harrisonburg, Va.

Game scores were 30-20, 30-22, and 30-20. The loss drops the Lady Royals to 4-13 overall on the season and 1-3 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference while Emory & Henry improves to 10-5 overall and 3-3 in the conference. The Wasps record does not indicate a result against Mary Baldwin on Friday, September 28.

The Wasps took control of the match early on as Joanna McGrath had four kills in seven attempts (.429 attack percentage) while Owen recorded six kills in the first game.

"The played good defense throughout the match," added EMU coach Steve Benson. "They had about five digs per game more than we did and that gave them 15 more opportunities to score."

The Lady Royals held an early four-point advantage in the second game before the Wasps again struck back and tied the match at 10 on a kill by Samantha Witmer. The two teams exchanged the lead and tied again before E&H opened up an eight-point advantage and went on to take the game on a kill by McGrath and an EMU attack error.

Witmer had five kills in the match. Heather Savedge had 37 assists for E&H.

Senior Courtney Miller (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) had a team high 12 kills while junior setter Sara Hoffman (Leesburg, Fla./Leesburg) had 20 assists and 10 digs for EMU.

"Right now were struggling with consistency, but we know what we need to do to play at the level we need to play at to succeed," added Benson.

The Lady Royals will get their chance to make up a game in the ODAC when they travel down to Virginia Beach, Va., to take on the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday, October 3, at 6:30 p.m.
