Senior
Kristie Souder (Telford, Pa.) scored at the 67th minute to put the game into overtime and the Eastern Mennonite University field hockey team and Lynchburg battled through double overtime before the Hornets were able to take the game on penalty strokes 3-2 and clinch the Old Dominion Athletic Championship.
EMU out shot the Hornets 26-22 while also holding a commanding 17-4 lead in penalty corners.
The Lady Royals started off the game slowly with Lynchburg taking possession of the ball and continually putting pressure on the EMU defense. The Hornets kept the ball close to the EMU goal through the first part of the first period allowing Arianna Kleeman the opportunity to put LC up 1-0 on her goal at the 18:56 mark, assisted by Samantha Howard.
The game remained 1-0 into the second period when the EMU offense started to click as sophomore
Kristina Landis (Harleysville, Pa.) tied the game at one with an unassisted goal 14 minutes into the period.
Landis along with Souder and sophomore
Kim Nissley (Dillsburg, Pa.) were named to the ODAC All-Tournament team after the game. The field hockey team and head coach
Brenda Bechler were also awarded with the ODAC Sportsmanship award following the conclusion of the semi-final contest on Friday.
With the game tied at one a piece the Hornets again seized control of the contest 10 minutes after Landis' goal with a goal of their own off the stick of Allie Weir to give Lynchburg a 2-1 lead.
Both teams battled through the remaining eight minutes of the contest with neither side able to mount a strong scoring opportunity. Then with the clock winding down and under three minutes remaining Souder connected in the middle of the circle off an assist from freshman
Alyssa Derstine (Telford, Pa.) to tie the game at two all and eventually send the game into the first overtime.
EMU, which had lost to Lynchburg earlier in the year, had only one other overtime contest this season, defeating Frostburg State 3-2.
As the teams returned to the field the Lady Royals again put pressure on the Lynchburg defense but were unable to capitalize on several scoring opportunities.
With the teams still locked in a tie the game shifted to penalty strokes. The teams were tied 2-2 after both teams made their third attempt after being shut out in their second. EMU was then stopped during the fourth set of players while LC made their shot. Lynchburg goalkeeper Elizabeth Foskey did the rest for the Hornets stopping the last attempt by EMU to seal the 3-2 win on penalty strokes.
EMU senior goalkeeper
Katie Moyer (Blooming Glen, Pa.) finished the game with eight saves while Foskey also tallied eight in the win.
