Quakers Prevail Over Lady Royals on Buzzer Beater

Courtney Hill's follow-up basket at the buzzer gave Guilford College a 56-55 victory over Eastern Mennonite University in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's basketball game on Sunday in Greensboro, N.C.

Guilford (8-13, 6-10 ODAC) led for all but three minutes of the first half in building a 29-22 lead at the break. The Quakers burst out in the second half on a 10-0 run to grab a 17-point lead with 16:28 remaining. Guilford led 46-29 with 11:48 left before EMU (15-7, 11-6 ODAC) made its move to get back in the game. The Lady Royals went on a 12-2 run to pull within 48-41 with 7:23 left

EMU continued its push and took its first lead since the opening minutes of the game 53-52 with 2:47 remaining. EMU led 55-54 when Amanda Renalds missed two free throws with 36 seconds remaining to set up Guilford for a shot at the lead.

Sophomore guard Dionne Graham missed a jumper with less than 10 seconds remaining. She gathered the rebound and shot a three-pointer. Hill secured the rebound and her tip-in layup at the buzzer gave the Quakers the 56-55 win.

Freshman center Brittany Green had a double-double with game-highs of 18 points and 15 rebounds for Guilford. Hill, a senior forward, had 12 points and six boards. She became the 12th player in Guilford history to score 1,000 career points. Graham added 10 points and five assists.

Guilford shot 33.9% from the floor but made just 1-of-15 three-point field goal attempts. The Quakers went 15-for-21 from the free throw line and held a slight 44-41 edge in rebounds.

Junior forward Stephanie Mathews had her fifth double-double of the season while junior forward Amanda Renalds collected her seventh double-double. Matthews had 17 points, 10 rebounds, and two steals. Renalds had 16 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, three blocks, and two steals. Freshman guard Miranda White set a career-high with 12 points, including 3-of-6 shooting from the three-point arch.

EMU shot 28.6% from the floor and made 4-of-16 three-pointers. The Lady Royals went 19-for-27 at the free throw line. They tied a season-low with 12 turnovers.

EMU will have a week off before traveling to Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Va. for a 2 p.m. game on Saturday.
