EMU Eliminated by Randolph-Macon 3-2 in Field Hockey

Senior Jessica Yoke notched the game-winner with 13 minutes remaining to lead fourth-seeded Randolph-Macon College to a 3-2 victory over fifth-seeded Eastern Mennonite University in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference quarterfinal field hockey match on Saturday in Ashland, Va.

R-MC (9-6) improved to 2-5 in the ODAC Tournament against EMU (9-7). The Lady Royals got on the board first when sophomore Lauren Michel (Princess Anne, Md.) scored with an assist from senior Jonalyn Denlinger (Lancaster, Pa.) 4:30 into the match. Denlinger finished her career with 160 points and tied Kristen Moyer for fifth on the EMU career assists chart with 46.

The Yellow Jackets tied the score at 1-1 with 11:30 left in the first half when senior Lyndsay Edginton (Chester Springs, Pa.) scored on a penalty stroke. EMU took the lead again with 1:23 left in the first half when junior Kristie Souder (Telford, Pa.) scored with an assist from senior Stephanie Derstine (Telford, Pa.).

With 26 minutes remaining in the match, R-MC freshman Kate Savage (Chesapeake, Va.) scored unassisted to tie the game at 2-2. Yoke (Newport News, Va.) then scored the game-winner with 13:30 left in the match with an assist from freshman Jill Dixon (Ann Arbor, Mich.).

Freshman Nicole Vera (Stafford, Va.) had five saves to record the victory for the Yellow Jackets. Senior Christina Bender (Belleville, Pa.) had four saves for the Lady Royals. R-MC led in shots 12-9 while EMU led in penalty corners 8-4.

In other quarterfinal action, #1 Washington and Lee (13-5) defeated #8 Sweet Briar (3-13) 4-1, #2 Lynchburg (14-5) shutout #7 Roanoke (4-15) 4-0, and #3 Virginia Wesleyan (13-5) topped #6 Bridgewater (8-10) 6-2 as all of the top seeds advanced to the semifinals next weekend in Lexington, Va.
