Lady Royals Rout Sweet Briar 6-0 in Women's Soccer

Junior Christy Hurst and sophomore Vanessa Rice netted two goals apiece as Eastern Mennonite University rolled to a 6-0 victory over Sweet Briar College on Wednesday afternoon in Harrisonburg, Va. It was the Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener for both schools.

Senior Kendra Martin started the scoring for EMU at the 13:30 mark off a cross from freshman Destiny Peshina. The score remained 1-0 through halftime until the 48:49 mark in the second half when Hurst scored on a breakaway. Later Peshina and Martin reversed rolls. After a Sweet Briar foul, Martin led Peshina for a header at the 71:23 mark.

The Lady Royals added three goals in the final ten minutes of the contest. Rice scored on a breakaway at 81:37 followed quickly by a Hurst goal at 83:54, assisted by senior Stephanie Good. Rice rounded out the EMU scoring with her second goal, this time on a 30-yard shot at the 88:04 mark with SBC goalkeeper Claire Bryan out of the cage.

The Lady Royals led the Vixens in shots 24-4. EMU goalkeeper sophomore Joy Shaiebly recorded her second shutout of the season with two saves in goal. Bryan took the loss in goal for the Vixens, recording six saves while allowing six goals.

EMU improves its record to 2-3, 1-0 in the ODAC. SBC falls to 1-4, 0-1 in the ODAC. The next contest for the Lady Royals will be Saturday September 18 when they travel to Roanoke for a 1:00 p.m. start.
