Grandstaff finishes with a career high tying 30 pionts in win over Randoph-Macon 77-73 in OT
HARRISONBURG, Va. – Carrie Grandstaff (Luray, Va./Mt. Carmel Christian) would finish the game tying a career high with 30 points, but it was her clutch trey with 23 seconds left in the second period to tie the game. Grandstaff and the Lady Royals would continue to pour it on in overtime and go on to defeat the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon 77-73. The win keeps the Lady Royals tied for first place in the ODAC with a 13-2 record and 17-2 overall.
Early on in the first period the Lady Royals would charge out to a quick lead against the Yellow Jackets. A lay-up by Grandstaff five minutes into the game would give the Lady Royals a 12-4 lead. Randolph-Macon would fight back to close the gap and tie the game at the 12 minute mark on a jumper by Megan Senske.
The lead would continue to change hands again before Randolph-Macon would go up by eight points with under a minute to play in the first. Megan Silva would come away with a steal and then drive down the court for the lay-up. A jumper by Grandstaff would close the Yellow Jacket lead to six heading into the half. Silva would finish the day 12 points and nine assists.
The second half would continue where the first half left off for the Yellow Jackets. A jumper by Jennie Carter would put Randolph-Macon up by nine points early on. The Lady Royals would fight back and would go ahead by one on a jumper by Stephanie Mathews (Woodstock, Va./Central). Mathews would finish the game with eight points, but would add 13 boards and a career high seven assists.
After taking a seven point lead the Yellow Jackets would surge back to close the gap. Two free throws by Michelle Orton and a jumper by Megan Silva would put the Yellow Jackets ahead by three points with 41 seconds left to play. After an EMU timeout Shantee Bryant (Verona, Va./Robert E. Lee) would drive down the court and quickly dish to Amanda Renalds (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby). Renalds would find a streaking Grandstaff who would hit the crucial trey to tie the game. Renalds would finish the game with 12 points while Bryant would add four points and four assists.
In overtime the Lady Royals would put the game out of reach as a lay-up by Regina Sours (Luray, Va./Mt. Carmel Christian) from Grandstaff would put the Lady Royals up by four with less than two minutes to play. As time wound down the Yellow Jackets would put Grandstaff on the line with the hope of coming back in the final seconds. Grandstaff would come up big though hitting both free throws to seal the 77-73 victory for EMU.
The Lady Royals will be back in action on Saturday, February 7 at home against Virginia Wesleyan. Game time is scheduled for 2 pm.
