Sophomore Laura Ludholtz totaled a career-high 30 points and 12 rebounds to lead EMU past Guilford
Salem , VA – Sophomore Laura Ludholtz ( Mount Crawford , VA / Fort Defiance ) totaled a career-high 30 points and 12 rebounds to lead top-seeded Eastern Mennonite past number-four Guilford , 65-58, in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Women's Basketball Tournament semifinal Friday afternoon at the Salem Civic Center .
The win sends the Royals (23-3) into Saturday's (2/28) ODAC Tournament final for the first time since 1986. Guilford , winners of two of the last three ODAC tourneys, finishes its season at 17-9.
Ludholtz and the Royals held off the Quakers' second-half rally that saw Guilford trim a 17-point deficit to one with 4:50 left in the game. Senior Nicole McCrory's ( Charlotte , NC / East Mecklenburg ) lay-up with 4:50 left capped a 13-0 Guilford run over a three-and-a-half minute span. Senior Jennie Keichline ( Chapel Hill , NC / East Chapel Hill ) scored six of her 10 second-half points during the spurt.
Eastern Mennonite took a timeout after McCrory's bucket. Ludholtz's jumper on the ensuing possession ended the Quakers' run and gave the Royals a 56-53 edge with 4:36 left. After Ludholtz's basket, the Quakers made only two of their last 10 field goals. She got stronger as Guilford tired and scored nine of her team's last 11 points, including two free throws with 13 seconds left to provide the game's final margin.
Ludholtz tallied 15 of her points by halftime and had eight points during the Royals' 16-0 run that covered the final 2:01 of the first half and the first 4:25 of the second half. Guilford missed all seven shots from the floor, two free throws and had four turnovers during the draught. Sophomore Amanda Renalds ( Bridgewater , VA /Turner Ashby) tallied six of her seven points during the Royals' decisive run.
Ludholtz made 10-of-14 field goals and 10-of-11 free throws. She added five steals and three assists, both game highs. Sophomore Stephanie Mathews ( Woodstock , VA /Central) contributed 11 points and six rebounds for the Royals.
Senior A.J. Robertson ( Eden , NC /Morehead) and sophomore Jennifer King ( Reidsville , NC / Rockingham County ) paced the Quakers with 14 points apiece. King, who also had three assists, matched her career high with a game-best four three-pointers. Keichline finished with 13 points, six boards and three assists. McCrory and senior Jackie Hardenbergh ( Oak Hill , VA /Paul VI) shared team-high rebounding honors with seven.
