Junior forward Amanda Renalds scored the game-winner on a lay-up from junior forward Stephanie Mathews with 13 seconds left to propel Eastern Mennonite University to a 43-42 Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's basketball victory over Roanoke College on Tuesday in Harrisonburg, Va.
EMU (4-0, 1-0 ODAC) staked itself to a 37-25 lead with 11:57 remaining in the game thanks to a 16-4 run to start the second half. Roanoke (3-1, 0-1 ODAC) applied full-court pressure and responded with a 17-4 run to jump ahead 42-41 with 3:31 remaining. However, the teams combined to miss their next nine field goals and two free throws. Coming out of a timeout, EMU broke through the press with Mathews getting open for a 2-on-1 fast break. She faked and passed to Renalds for the open lay-up. Roanoke's Cindy McGraw missed a jumper as time expired to seal the EMU victory.
Renalds finished with game-highs of 10 points and eight rebounds. Mathews added nine points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Senior forward Kayce Smith and sophomore guard Cindy McGraw each scored eight points to lead Roanoke.
The two teams were tied 21-21 at halftime thanks to a 30-foot three-pointer by senior guard Shantee Bryant as the clock expired. EMU shot 38.3% from the field but connected on just 2-of-12 from the three-point arch. Roanoke hit 27.5% of its shots from the floor. Both teams struggled from the charity stripe with EMU converting 5-of-12 opportunities and Roanoke connecting on 9-of-20 attempts. Both teams also struggled with turnovers as each committed 15.
EMU will now travel to Winchester, Va. on Saturday for a non-conference game against Shenandoah University at 2 p.m.
