Lady Royals Defeat Fighting Squirrels 85-50

Five players scored in double figures as Eastern Mennonite University opened its 2004-05 women's basketball season with an 85-50 non-conference victory over Mary Baldwin College on Tuesday in Staunton, Va.
EMU (1-0) shot 42.5% in the opening period to jump out to a 48-11 halftime lead over MBC (0-3), which shot 17.2% in the first half, including 6.3% from the three-point arch. The Fighting Squirrels utilized a full-court press much of the second half to apply pressure and outscored the Lady Royals 39-37 in the second frame.
Junior forward Amanda Renalds recorded a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds for EMU. Senior center Regina Sours held game-high honors with 13 points on a perfect 6-for-6 performance from the field. Freshman guard Miranda White scored 11 points and had six assists. Junior forward Stephanie Mathews and freshman guard Tara Jones also had 11 points each for EMU.
Junior guard Katrina Scruggs led Mary Baldwin with 12 points. Freshman guard Jessica Carter scored 10 points.
EMU held a 51-38 edge in rebounding and had 17 steals. Both teams were turnover-prone with MBC committing 33 and EMU tallying 27 turnovers.
The Lady Royals will travel to Washington, D.C. this weekend to play in the Gallaudet Tournament. On Saturday, EMU will face Fairleigh-Dickinson at 8 p.m., which follows host Gallaudet against Pitt-Bradford. The consolation game on Sunday will be at 2 p.m. with the championship at 4 p.m.
