Lady Royals basketball team suffered their first loss to Roanoke College 64-52
HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Eastern Mennonite University women's basketball team suffered their first loss of the season to Roanoke College 64-52 at home. Roanoke avenged a 61-54 loss earlier in the season to EMU held the Royals to just 35% shooting in the game.
Roanoke jumped out to an 8-6 lead before opening up a double-digit with 8:22 remaining. Jennie Schafer hit a jumper giving the Maroons a 19-8 lead. The Roanoke lead would increase to 16 points with a Lindsay Reynolds three-pointer. EMU cut the advantage to eight points with 3:22 left on the clock when Shantee Bryant (Verona, Va./Robert E. Lee) drove the lane for an easy lay-up. A 7-0 run to end the half for Roanoke would give them a 33-18 lead at the break.
EMU, normally a 44% shooting team, shot just 29% in the first half.
The second half was no different as Roanoke quickly extended its lead to 24 points as the cold shooting Royals scored just three points in 5:30 to start the second period. Roanoke again would take advantage of a cold shooting Royal team and push their lead to 26 points, the highest of the day. EMU would rattle off a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to 19 points then Carrie Grandstaff (Luray, Va./Mt. Carmel Christian) hit a three-pointer then drove for a lay-up to help cut the lead to 16 points.
Stephanie Mathews (Woodstock, Va./Central) would knock down a three-pointer cutting the Maroon lead to 13 points. EMU would not get any closer until the final seconds as Bryant hit one from downtown closing out the game.
Roanoke was led by Reynolds who poured in 18 points. Cindy McGraw added 11 points while Chandra Forrester chipped in 10 points. The Maroons outrebounded EMU 44-29 while shooting 42% for the game.
Grandstaff led EMU with 12 points and five assists. Mathews scored nine points. Amanda Renalds (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) recorded nine points while grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds.
