EMU Unable to Sustain Momentum and Fall to Guilford College
HARRISONBURG, Va. – The EMU men's basketball team was unable to sustain their first half momentum and fell to the visiting Quakers of Guilford College 95-79 Saturday afternoon at University Commons. The loss drops EMU to 3-10 overall and 1-6 in the ODAC.
The Royals were able to hang tough with Guilford College (8-7, 4-4) throughout the first period. Jason Sager (Edinburg, Va./Central) and E.J Arrington (Staunton, Va./Stuarts Draft) lead the charge for EMU. Sager contributed 10 points in the half to go along with six rebounds while Arrington added 11 points and five boards.
Genaro Lawhorn and the Quakers though would not go away quietly in the first period. Lawhorn lead all players with 14 points in only seven minutes of play and would finish the game with 19 total points. Jevon Clarke would add another seven points to give the Quakers a four point lead heading into the half.
EMU would open up the first half on a bucket by Sager to close within two of the Guilford lead. After a missed lay-up by Devon Clyburn the Royals would tie the game on a lay-up by Arrington from senior guard Mike Culen (Winchester, Va./James Wood). Culen would finish the game with 12 points and would eclipse the 1,000 point plateau for his career.
After trading baskets Clyburn would hit a trey and put the Quakers ahead by three. EMU would be unable to answer the trey as the Quakers never looked back. Clyburn would finish the game with 14 points and two steals while Clarke would add another 16 points and five rebounds.
Guilford College outshot the Royals 57% to 37% in the second period.
